Indus Waters Treaty guarantees fair distribution of water; India’s suspension is condemnable:President
Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed concern over the use of shared water resources as a weapon and has called for the full restoration of the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to details, in his message on the occasion of World Water Day, the President said that the Indus Waters Treaty ensures fair distribution of water in the region, and India’s suspension of the agreement is condemnable. He emphasized that India should fully restore its implementation.

In his statement, the President said that in many areas of Pakistan, people are مجبور (forced) to rely on unsafe water sources, while the burden of lack of access to clean water falls more heavily on women and girls, who spend valuable time fetching water.

He added that the provision of safe water should be made a national priority, and there is a need for effective management of water resources along with increased investment in this sector.

The President stated that measures to conserve rainwater are the need of the hour, and that even small actions at the public level can yield significant results.

He further said that climate change and population growth are increasing pressure on water resources, while there are also concerns over disruptions in hydrological data sharing.
