Sindh Governor announces 80-square-yard plots for Lyari building collapse victims

Karachi: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has announced that each victim of the Lyari building collapse will be allotted an 80-square-yard plot.

He urged the affected families to visit the Governor House to register themselves, and called on the Sindh government to provide them with compensation equal to six months' rent.

During his visit to the site of the collapsed building in Lyari, Governor Tessori said, “We will not politicize the committee formed by the Sindh Chief Minister. What needs to change is not faces, but the system itself.

The formation of an investigative committee by the Sindh government is a positive step. The Lyari building collapse is a heartbreaking tragedy—people didn’t even get a chance to react before the structure gave way.”

He added that the removal of the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) was a welcome step, but emphasized that systemic reform was more important than changing individuals. “This tragedy must not be politicized, and every possible form of support must be extended to the victims,” he stated.

Governor Tessori reassured the victims: “To my brothers and sisters, I promise—I will not let you down. The families of those who lost their lives will be given plots. Delays in public housing schemes have forced people to live in unsafe portions. We are setting up a helpline for Lyari tragedy victims.”

He also announced that families left homeless by the incident would receive ration support from the Governor House. “We will do everything we can to support the Lyari victims. I will instruct the new DG of SBCA to work round the clock. Our doors remain open 24/7 for the victims of this tragedy,” he concluded.
