Hollywood action film legend Chuck Norris passes away

AFP: Chuck Norris, the famed American action star, has passed away. His family announced the news in an Instagram post on Friday evening.

The Walker, Texas Ranger star was 86 years old.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning. While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace,” read the statement.

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.

“He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”

Paying tribute to his fans, the family said the “love and support he received from fans around the world meant so much to him, and our family is truly thankful for it”.

“To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends. We know many of you had heard about his recent hospitalisation, and we are truly grateful for the prayers and support you sent his way. As we grieve this loss, we kindly ask for privacy for our family during this time.”

Norris was hospitalised in Hawaii on Thursday.

His fame as an action star went beyond silver screen theatrics — Variety noted that he was a black belt in judo, third degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, fifth degree black belt in Karate, eighth degree black belt in Taekwondo, ninth degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and tenth degree black belt in Chun Kuk Do.

The actor was known for a series of action films in the 70s and 80s, including the Delta Force and Missing in Action films, Good Guys Wear BlackThe OctagonLone Wolf McQuadeCode of Silence and Firewalker.

In 1972, he played Bruce Lee’s nemesis in The Way of the Dragon, also known as Return of the Dragon.

From 1993 to 2001 he starred in the CBS series Walker, Texas Ranger, which drew inspiration from his Lone Wolf McQuade film.

Norris is survived by his wife Gena O’Kelley, and children Eric, Mike, Dakota, Danilee and Dina.
