Web Desk: In an ICC T20 World Cup group match, South Africa defeated Afghanistan in the second Super Over on Wednesday.

Batting first in the Super Over, Afghanistan scored 17 runs, which South Africa matched. In the second Super Over, South Africa posted 23 runs, but Afghanistan could only manage 19, handing the Proteas a four-run victory.

Earlier, in the Group D match being played in Ahmedabad, India, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to field first.

South Africa opened the innings with Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock, but Markram was caught off Fazalhaq Farooqi with the total on 12. After the early wicket, De Kock and Rickelton rebuilt the innings responsibly, dominating the Afghan bowlers. Both batters brought up their half-centuries in the same over. Rickelton was dismissed for 61, while De Kock made 59.

Dewald Brevis was out for 23, and David Miller chipped in with 20 runs. For Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai claimed three wickets, while Rashid Khan picked up two.

Afghanistan began their chase with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. At one stage, Afghanistan looked well placed in the match; however, the loss of five wickets in the space of 13 deliveries led to their collapse, and the entire team was bowled out for 187 in the 20th over.

For Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a blistering knock of 87 off 42 balls, smashing seven sixes and four fours, while Azmatullah Omarzai scored 22 and Rashid Khan made 20. For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi took three wickets.

It is worth noting that Afghanistan had lost their opening match to New Zealand, while South Africa had defeated Canada by 57 runs in their first game.
