KP Assembly: PTI secures six Senate seats, opposition five

Peshawar: The official results for all Senate seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly have been announced. According to Dawn News, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has secured six seats, including one by Murad Saeed, while the opposition has won five.

The Election Commission formally declared the results for all candidates, and the Returning Officer issued the Certificates of Election (Form 58).

According to the official count, PTI’s Murad Saeed secured 26 votes, Faisal Javed 22 votes, Noorul Haq Qadri and Mirza Gul Afridi each received 21 votes. Azam Swati and Robina Naz won with 89 votes each.

On the opposition side, Talha Mehmood of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) received 17 votes for a general seat, while PML-N’s Niaz Ahmad Khan and JUI-F’s Atta-ul-Haq Darvesh each secured 18 votes. JUI-F’s Dilawar Khan received 54 votes, and PPP’s Robina Khalid won on the women’s reserved seat.

Full Implementation of Government-Opposition Agreement

The Senate elections were conducted in full compliance with the power-sharing agreement reached between the government and the opposition. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and the Leader of the Opposition jointly oversaw the implementation of the agreement. Members were instructed to rank seven candidates in order of preference for general seats.

As per the agreed formula, the government was allocated six seats and the opposition five. Both sides had advised their members to vote according to this specific arrangement.

Notably, the agreement between the government and opposition called for an uncontested election on 11 upper house seats with a 6-5 distribution formula. However, this could not be fully realized due to the refusal of some dissident PTI members to withdraw their nominations. PTI eventually convinced four dissidents to step down late at night, but polling became necessary when Khurram Zeeshan refused to withdraw.

According to the Election Commission’s official notification, a total of 145 members cast their votes for the 11 seats.

The government fielded four candidates for general seats, while the opposition fielded three. Each side also nominated two candidates for the reserved seats—one for women and one for technocrats.

PTI's nominees for general seats were Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Afridi, and Pir Noorul Haq Qadri. Robina Naz represented PTI for the women’s seat, and Azam Swati for the technocrat seat.
