Spain launches war crimes probe against Israeli PM Netanyahu

(Web Desk): Spain’s National Court has formally launched an investigation into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Foreign Minister, and several high-ranking officials over alleged war crimes.

The court is conducting the investigation in the context of an attack on a ship named “Marianne”, which belonged to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, a human rights organization. The vessel was carrying humanitarian aid from an Italian port to Gaza in June.

It is important to note that Israeli forces have imposed a blockade on Gaza, preventing humanitarian supplies from entering the besieged area. Despite Israeli military threats to stop the ship from reaching Gaza, human rights activists on board refused to back down.

In response, Israeli forces used drones, tear gas, and force, and detained 12 human rights activists on board. The incident is being labeled a violation of international law.

Jaume Asens, a member of the European Parliament and a lawyer, announced that the case was filed in Spain’s National Court on behalf of Sergio Toribio, a Spanish activist, and the Committee for Solidarity with the Arab Cause.

Asens further stated that the court acknowledged the attack on the aid vessel as a criminal act and would investigate whether excessive force was used, illegal detentions occurred, and what level of responsibility lies with Israeli officials.

This marks the first time a European court has directly announced a war crimes investigation against Israel’s top leadership. If the allegations are proven, international arrest warrants could be issued, and victims may pursue further legal action through the International Criminal Court (ICC).

So far, Israel has not released any official statement regarding the matter. However, in the past, Israel has consistently rejected the jurisdiction and legitimacy of such investigations by international courts.

It’s worth noting that the ICC has already issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
