Pakistan, Iran eye closer military and economic cooperation

Rawalpindi: Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir met with the Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, during which both sides agreed to further strengthen defense relations.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is currently on a visit to Iran and visited the Iranian General Staff Headquarters in Tehran.

The ISPR spokesperson stated that Field Marshal Asim Munir met with Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. During the meeting, the military leadership of Pakistan and Iran discussed the regional security situation. The talks also covered border security, defense cooperation, and economic ties.

According to ISPR, both sides exchanged views on Pakistan-Iran defense relations and agreed to enhance them further. There was also discussion on transforming the Pakistan-Iran border into a zone of economic prosperity.

The military spokesperson added that Field Marshal Asim Munir was presented with a guard of honor by the Iranian armed forces.

Additionally, Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. They also held a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The ISPR further stated that the official visit of the Army Chief and the Prime Minister to Türkiye, Iran, and Azerbaijan is ongoing.
