WEB DESK -- Dr Najeeb Naqi was elected the 25th president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Wednesday, securing 32 votes in the presidential election held in the AJK Legislative Assembly.
The polling continued until 1pm, with 45 members taking part in the election. Dr Naqi, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominee, defeated Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Chaudhry Latif Akbar, who secured 13 votes.
Dr Naqi received 31 votes from PML-N members and one from a member of the Dast-o-Bazu Party. One assembly member remained absent.
Dr Naqi belongs to the Pallandri constituency of Poonch Division. He served as AJK health minister from 2006 to 2011 and again held the portfolio during the PML-N government from 2016 to 2021.
