Shehbaz Sharif drops PM immunity clause from 27th Amendment bill

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the immediate withdrawal of a proposed amendment to the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill that sought to grant the Prime Minister immunity from criminal proceedings.

In a post on X, Shehbaz Sharif stated that upon returning from Azerbaijan, he learned that some senators from his party had introduced a clause in the Senate seeking immunity for the Prime Minister in criminal cases. He clarified that this clause had not been part of the draft approved by the federal cabinet.

The prime minister expressed gratitude to the senators for their intentions but instructed them to withdraw the amendment without delay. Emphasizing transparency and accountability, Shehbaz Sharif said that an elected Prime Minister is answerable before the law and the people.

According to sources, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar has also been informed of the Prime Minister’s decision.

The Joint Committee of the Senate and National Assembly on Law and Justice began its session on Sunday, chaired by senators Farooq H Naik and MNA Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk, to deliberate on the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The committee is holding final deliberations on all clauses of the constitutional amendments, while the matter concerning lifetime immunity for the president remains under consideration.
