Alert issued for increased river flow due to rains in Punjab

Lahore: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert for increased river flow due to rains.

The PDMA spokesperson said that there is a possibility of increased water flow in the Mangla upstream of the Jhelum River, which may lead to moderate flooding in the Mangla upstream within 24 hours.

Low-level flooding occurred at Gandasinghwala in the Sutlej River and at Head Sadhanai in the Ravi.

Meanwhile, the worst of the floods has passed through the Bahawalpur district, but it has left indelible marks of destruction. Thousands of houses have collapsed due to the flood, and crops standing on millions of acres have been destroyed. However, now the floodwater is full of mosquitoes, which are causing diseases.

The process of draining water is also underway from the Jalalpur Pirwala tehsil of Multan; some low-lying settlements and areas are still underwater.

All 7 cracks in the Nooraja Bhatta Dam have been completely closed, and the flood-affected M5 Motorway remains closed for the 25th day.

In this regard, officials say that the 23-kilometer-long track of the motorway has been affected at more than 13 places. The restoration work on the motorway will start soon. Traffic is being diverted through alternative routes.
