Karachi installs 891 cameras under phase one of safe city project

(Web Desk): As part of Karachi’s Safe City Project, 891 surveillance cameras have been installed under the first phase, which includes a total of 1,300 cameras.

During a meeting chaired by Inspector General of Police (Sindh) Ghulam Nabi Memon, officials were briefed on the progress of the Sindh Safe City Project, the e-challan system, and police emergency response mechanisms.

It was informed that the first phase of the Safe City project is nearing completion. Under this system, emergency response vehicles (ERVs) will receive alerts within five seconds. The second phase of the project is scheduled to begin later this year.

DIG Traffic briefed the meeting that the e-challan system has been piloted at selected locations in Karachi. Once the second phase is completed, the e-challan system will be implemented across all major roads in the provincial capital.

The IG Sindh stated that under the Safe City initiative, various police units such as Madadgar-15, Shaheen Force, Highway Patrol, AVLC, and others will be integrated. Emergency Vehicle Responders (EVRs) will also be deployed at strategic locations.

The system-generated alerts will be transmitted not only to EVRs but also to all field formation units.

The IG noted that with the implementation of the e-challan system, direct interaction between the police and public will be minimized. He emphasized that the Safe City Project will provide facilities for monitoring and controlling traffic and crime across cities in Sindh.

He instructed all relevant departments and agencies to begin integrating the surveillance system with field formations, district police units, and city-level command centers.

The meeting was attended by the Director General of Sindh Safe City Authority, NRTC officials, DIGs from various police ranges and units, SSP AVLC, and other senior officers.
